The housing here is largely Georgian, early Victorian and later Victorian terraces, together with mansion blocks, mews houses and studio buildings. Much of Chelsea sits within conservation areas and a large number of buildings are listed, which affects boundary walls, railings, front areas, hard surfaces and even the choice of materials. Structures, garden buildings and changes to walls may need consent, and it is far cheaper to establish that before drawings are finalised.

Practically, the constraints are severe: no side access on most terraces, so materials come through the house or over the roof; lower ground courtyards that sit below the drainage and need thoughtful water management; deep shade from surrounding buildings; and mature planting in neighbouring gardens that gives welcome maturity but competes for light and root space.

Restraint is what makes a small Chelsea garden feel expensive. One stone, one brick, a limited plant palette repeated with confidence, and joinery detailed properly rather than decorated.
