Garden Design & Landscaping in Fulham

Shoots & Leaves design, build and plant gardens in Fulham. We are a landscape design and construction company with over twenty years of London experience, and we keep every stage in-house — survey and design, excavation, drainage, brickwork, paving, joinery, metalwork, lighting, irrigation and planting.

Fulham is a short distance from our yard in Hammersmith, which is genuinely useful on SW6 streets where parking is at a premium, access is through the house and a build has to be run in tight, well-planned stages rather than sprawling across a summer.

From a small courtyard behind a Fulham terrace to a full redesign after a side-return extension, we will visit, discuss what you want from the space and follow up with a written quote covering all the work.

Gardens in Fulham

SW6 is overwhelmingly Victorian: long runs of terraced and semi-detached brick houses on a tight grid, with gardens that are typically narrow, walled on both sides and shorter than their equivalents further west. Around Parsons Green, Hurlingham and the streets towards Bishops Park there are larger houses and a few generous plots, along with mansion blocks and newer riverside developments with terraces rather than gardens.

Because so many Fulham houses have been extended sideways and to the rear, the usable garden has often shrunk while the demands on it have grown: dining, a lawn or play area for children, bin and bike storage, and somewhere for the plant that serves the extension. Boundary walls are usually stock brick in lime mortar, frequently in need of repointing, and party wall considerations come up regularly because everything is close.

The ground is London clay, with river gravels closer to the Thames, and the water table rises noticeably towards the river. Small, enclosed gardens surrounded by three-storey walls also mean deep shade for much of the day and a warm, sheltered microclimate in the sunny corners — which is a real opportunity if the planting is chosen for it.

Garden Design for Fulham Homes

In a small Fulham garden every square metre has to earn its place, so the design starts with what actually happens out there. A terrace sized for the table you own; a route to the bins that does not cross the seating; storage built in rather than bought later; and then as much planted volume as the space allows, because it is planting, not paving, that makes a small garden feel finished.

Enclosure is the other big theme. Tall walls can be turned into an asset with climbers, wall-trained shrubs, wire trellis and honest, well-detailed joinery, and repointed or lime-rendered brickwork instantly lifts the whole space. Mirrors and gimmicks age badly; good brickwork and a single well-laid stone do not.

Lighting matters more here than in a large garden, because the space is seen from the kitchen every evening of the year. Discreet, low-level lighting on a route, a wall wash and one uplit tree will do more for a Fulham garden than a scattering of fittings.

Front gardens are frequently under pressure for off-street parking. Paving over about five square metres with an impermeable surface needs permission unless run-off is controlled on site, so we design them with permeable surfaces, planted beds and gravel gullies to keep water out of the street.

More about how we work: garden design and landscaping & construction.

Landscaping & Garden Construction

Most Fulham builds run through the house or a narrow passage, so we protect the route, work in staged deliveries and keep a clean site — on a terraced street that is a courtesy to your neighbours as much as to you.

Our groundworks team excavates, resolves levels and installs drainage, taking surface water to a suitable outfall where a soakaway is not appropriate this close to the river. Then comes the hard landscaping: paving and pathways, brickwork and repointing, raised beds, steps and retaining walls, followed by fencing, gates, screens, pergolas and bespoke bin, bike and storage joinery made to fit.

Lighting cable and irrigation pipework are installed while the ground is open, then soil is improved or imported and the planting, turf or artificial grass goes in. One company, written quote first, clear updates throughout.

Our Work

The clearest way to judge a landscaper is to look at what they build. Our portfolio shows completed gardens across London — the paving, brickwork, steps, joinery and planting we would bring to a garden in Fulham — with the design thinking behind each one.

We would rather show you our work than list projects we cannot verify, so nothing here is presented as a local case study unless it genuinely is one.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is my Fulham garden too small to be worth designing?
Small gardens usually benefit the most, because mistakes are more obvious. Getting the terrace size, the storage, the boundaries, the lighting and the planting right transforms a courtyard that is currently just a route to the bins.
Can you repoint or rebuild my garden walls?
Yes. Victorian stock brick walls in Fulham are usually laid in lime mortar, so we point them with a suitable soft mortar rather than hard cement, and rebuild where the structure has actually failed.
What can I plant against a shaded three-storey wall?
Climbing hydrangea, star jasmine on a warmer aspect, wall-trained shrubs, ferns and shade-tolerant perennials all work well. The key is decent soil volume and irrigation at the base of a wall, where the ground is usually dry and poor.
Do you work on riverside terraces and balconies?
We design and build planted terraces where access, weight and waterproofing allow. We will be straightforward about what is practical after seeing the space.
