Shoots and Leaves Case Study

Edgy Woodland Wonderland in Autumn

South London, UK

We transformed a simple grass patch, enclosed on three sides by a garden fence, into a distinctive outdoor space that delights the senses year-round. Our client sought our artistic approach to create a small yet imaginative and immersive garden.
Despite its compact size, we designed the space as an explorative journey filled with hidden surprises. Seasonal planting ensures constant change—Ginkgos, Cherries, and Pines form a woodland canopy, their foliage and blossoms providing vibrant displays from spring to autumn. Carefully chosen pots echo the Ginkgo’s golden tones, enhancing the garden’s fleeting autumn spectacle.

Three offset feature walls clad in bespoke dark tiles add structure and movement. Their varied sizes and thicknesses create shifting light and shadow, while green accents subtly mirror surrounding foliage. These tiles extend into the ground, guiding the eye through the garden with slate-filled gaps for a seamless finish.
The result is a once-bare lawn transformed into a layered, evolving landscape—rich in texture, color, and curiosity through every season.
